DRI™ in the Field: Supporting Water Infrastructure Planning in Uzbekistan

KenWave recently completed a Dynamic Response Imaging (DRI™) assessment in Uzbekistan, working alongside SUEZ and Toshkent shahar suv ta’minoti to support the condition assessment of critical water infrastructure in Tashkent.

The project demonstrates how advanced condition information can be collected across a varied pipeline network while normal operations continue.

Assessing a Diverse Pipeline Inventory

The field program covered approximately 2.7 kilometres of pipelines ranging from 400 mm to 800 mm in diameter. The assets included both steel and cast iron pipelines, requiring the team to work across different pipe sizes, materials and operating conditions.

Using the DRI solution, KenWave collected high-resolution condition data without interrupting normal service. This approach allows utilities to investigate important transmission infrastructure without removing pipelines from operation or undertaking exploratory excavation.

From Condition Data to Better Planning

Understanding the condition of buried water mains is essential when utilities are deciding where to direct limited maintenance and rehabilitation resources.

The information produced through the assessment can help asset owners:

  • Identify areas requiring closer attention
  • Prioritize maintenance and rehabilitation activities
  • Support longer-term capital planning
  • Make decisions using measured condition information
  • Reduce uncertainty surrounding critical buried assets

Rather than relying primarily on asset age, material or failure history, utilities can use current condition information to develop plans that reflect how their pipelines are performing today.

Collaboration in the Field

Successful international projects depend on more than the assessment method alone. They require coordination among technology providers, engineering partners, utility teams and local stakeholders.

The collaboration between KenWave, SUEZ and Toshkent shahar suv ta’minoti brought together field experience, local system knowledge and advanced pipeline assessment capabilities. The work supports the continuing modernization of Tashkent’s water infrastructure and the development of more resilient water services.

KenWave also recognizes field team members Andre Asaad, PMP, and Seifien Luka for their work delivering the assessment.

As utilities around the world seek better ways to understand aging infrastructure, this project shows how non-invasive condition assessment can support practical, evidence-based asset management while keeping essential water systems in operation.

Why Utilities Are Turning to Dynamic Response Imaging™?

  • Non-invasive, external platform

  • 🔧 Works through valves, hydrants, and access points

  • 🛰️ Detects wall thinning, pipe class changes, leaks
  • 📏 5–20 ft sub-pipe stick resolution
  • 🧠 Ideal for sub-transmission and hard-to-inspect pipes

  • 📊 Supports capital planning with real-world data

Peer-Reviewed Pipeline Condition Assessment Research

Two peer-reviewed papers presented through ASCE Pipelines 2026 explore the use of Dynamic Response Imaging (DRI™) for assessing critical buried pipelines. Drawing on real-world applications involving prestressed concrete cylinder pipe and asbestos cement pipe, the research demonstrates how measured condition data can support more confident asset management decisions.
