City of Gresham

Condition assessment of 6, 8, and 10 inch cast iron and ductile iron watermains

Project Overview

KenWave was engaged by the City of Gresham to utilize its non-invasive Dynamic Response Imaging™ (DRI) technology to perform condition assessment and leak detection of small diameter distribution water mains across four different sites. The scope of work is over 0.66 miles (1.067 km) of 6, 8, and 10 inch Cast Iron (CI) and Ductile Iron (DI) watermains.

Through multiple rounds of testing, KenWave’s DRI technology demonstrated its merits, identifying pipe wall properties at a resolution of 6 feet. KenWave was able to identify the areas in the pipeline that were experiencing increased degradation, these areas were indicated to the City of Gresham.

The City later excavated pipe coupons of areas with lower/higher remaining wall thickness as indicated by KenWave, in efforts to validate KenWave’s reported findings. KenWave’s DRI results were found to be within 98% accuracy of the City’s findings.

Results

  • A residual structural thickness profile of the 0.66 mile scope was delivered with a resolution of 6 feet.
  • DRI technology was able to detect areas with high levels of degradation.
  • KenWave demonstrated the ability to perform condition assessment on CI and DI pipes for distances of up to 887 feet.
  • KenWave’s results were validated by the city with an accuracy of 98%.
