KenWave was contracted by CIMA+ to perform a non-invasive pipe wall condition assessment on segments of the hot and chilled water network at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The pipes are installed both in buried trenches accessible via combined service manholes and in concrete tunnels. The hot water pipe, installed in the early 1990’s, was made of carbon steel and included a double wall pipe (carrier and conduct) in addition to an insulation protective layer. While carbon steel has a similar failure mode like Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP) and is characterized by corrosion pitting, the challenge in the inspection was the pipe double wall specs and high operation temperature. Hence, some modifications were required to the dynamic response-based and non-invasive KenWave Technology to accommodate these challenging conditions.
